Sales of new vehicles in the Mexican market increased 12.3 percent, year over year, in May to 119,985 units. This volume is the highest for a single month in the last seven years, and it is the thirteenth consecutive time that it exceeds 100,000 units sold per month, according to a SteelOrbis analysis of data from the national statistics agency Inegi.
Of the total volume sold, five companies accounted for 58.5 percent. Nissan contributed 17.4 percent of the total, followed by General Motors with 13.8 percent, Volkswagen 11.7 percent, Toyota with 8.3 percent, and KIA with 7.3 percent.
In May, the market winners were Honda with 114 basis points and a total of 3.2 percent market share, the Chinese company Great Wall Motor gained 109 basis points and concluded the month with 1.1 percent market share. Meanwhile, Mazda gained 108 basis points and stood at 6.6 percent and General Motors gained 103 basis points and ended the month with a market share of 13.8 percent.
In contrast, the losers were Nissan with 141 basis points less and ending with a market share of 17.4 percent, MG Motor lost 147 points and remained at 3.2 percent and Renault lost 257 basis points and was left with a market share of 1.3 percent.
In the accumulated five months, 585,721 units were sold, 12.7 percent more compared to the same period in 2023.
