Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Group has announced that it has launched a tender process to procure hydrogen for use at its green steel plant.
Within the initial stage of its low-carbon steelmaking program SALCOS®, the company will use up to 150,000 mt of hydrogen per year. 9,000 mt of this volume is expected to be provided by Salzgitter’s 100 MW electrolysis plant at the same site from 2026 onwards. Also, third-party hydrogen procurement is scheduled to begin as of 2027, should Germany’s hydrogen core network or other supply routes be established.
The European Commission (EC) has lately approved German state funding worth an estimated €3 billion to support the construction of a hydrogen core network and a dedicated pipeline in Germany, as SteelOrbis reported previously.
