Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Group has announced that it decided to initiate a feasibility study to construct a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant at the deepwater port of Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony, having reached an agreement with the Federal State of Lower Saxony, the City of Wilhelmshaven and the industrial partners Rhenus and Uniper.
The feasibility study also includes developing the necessary infrastructure for supplying it with raw materials, natural gas and hydrogen. The company said that the results of the feasibility study will be announced by March 31, 2021.
With this project, two million mt per year of DRI castings is expected to be produced. The products will be transported by rail to the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH’s integrated steelworks to be transformed into high-grade, eco-friendly strip steel products.
