The volume of scrap metal imports to Mexico in October decreased 11.2 percent, year-over-year, to 219,074 metric tons (mt), the second consecutive annual decrease and the seventh drop so far this year, according to a SteelOrbis analysis of data from the national statistics agency Inegi.
Of the total imported, 86.9 percent or 190,433 mt were imported from the United States or Canada. Citing confidentiality, Inegi omits to provide volumes from other regions, but it is noted that it also comes from Asia, Europe and Latin America.
Exports totaled 115,595 mt, 19.1 percent more year-on-year. 90.2 percent of exports were sent to the United States and Canada; 6.8 percent were sent to Asia.
In the January-October period, 1.99 million mt were imported, 16.5 percent less than the same period last year. The exported volume totaled 1.0 million mt, 27.7 percent more than the January-October period of 2023.
