The Argentinian steel distributor and service center Sidersa announced plans to build a steel plant in the city of San Nicolas, province of Buenos Aires.
According to the plans, the new plant will require investments of $300 million, of which $100 million for imported technology and equipment, and $200 million of items to be supplied locally.
The announcement mentioned that the plant will be based on state-of-the-art technology, basically feeding on scrap to produce 360,000 mt per year of rebars to serve the local civil construction sector.
Depending on the local demand, the new plant could export 30 percent of its production, generating $100 million per year in foreign currencies, urgently needed by Argentina.
Without entering in detail, Sidersa informed that the updated technology of the plant will allow for a shorter period of construction, higher productivity, and CO2 emissions reduced by half in relation to the conventional technologies.
The company added that the new unit will be the world’s most sustainable plant, considering the recycling of scrap and energy savings, emphasizing that it will be the first steel plant to be built in Argentina in the last 50 years.
