Giant Austrian-based plantmaker Siemens has announced that the Industry Solutions Division of Siemens Ltd. India, Mumbai, has received an order from the largest Indian steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) for the supply of power distribution equipment for its Bokaro steelworks.
The order, which amounts to a value of around €28 million, is part of SAIL's €1.8 billion comprehensive project to expand and modernize the Bokaro steelworks, and will allow the mill to enlarge the power distribution system and to augment the power capacity of the captive power plant to 590 MW.
The deal includes the design, supply and installation of 220 kilovolt and 132 kilovolt switchyards connected by 26 kilometer-long transmission lines. Siemens will also be responsible for testing and commissioning all the systems.
Accordingly, the aim of the Bokaro steelworks expansion plan is to increase hot metal production from 4.5 million mt to 7.44 million mt and crude steel production from 4.36 million mt to 7 million mt. As a result, the amount of salable steel products is planned to grow from 3.78 million mt to 6.53 million mt. To this end, the steelworks will be augmented with a new steel melt shop with an annual capacity of 3.8 million mt and with a new cold rolling mill equipped by Siemens VAI for the production of 1.8 million mt of high-quality flat products per year. The project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2011-2012.
