Swiss plantmaker SMS Concast, a company of Germany-based SMS Group, has announced that it has received an order from Portugal's largest long steel manufacturer SN Longos Seixal to modernize its six-strand continuous caster.

According to a statement released by SMS Group, SMS Concast will be carrying out extensive revamping work on the six-strand caster, which has a radius of seven meters, to bring it up to the latest state of the art.

Currently producing cast sections of 120 x 120 mm and 130 x 130 mm, the machine will be able to cast two new sections of 140 x 140 mm and 160 x 160 mm respectively, following the revamp. This revamp will enable the product range of the caster to be greatly enhanced in terms of quality. It will be possible to produce high carbon steels for springs and for pre-stressed concrete rebars as well as for cold-heading grades.

In addition, the CONVEX® technology will ensure that optimum metallurgical results are obtained for all casting sizes.

SMS Concast will provide full technical and metallurgical assistance during the erection and commissioning periods. Commissioning is scheduled for March 2010.

SMS Concast focuses exclusively on processes and technologies for the long product steelmaking sector. The design and supply of key technological equipment within SMS Concast's scope includes minimills, electrical arc furnaces AC/DC, vacuum degassing plants VD/VOD, ladle furnaces and continuous casting machines for blooms, beam-blanks, rounds and billets. For long product rolling mills, SMS Concast collaborates with Germany-based SMS Meer, another plantmaking company of the SMS Group.
