South African steel producer Scaw Metals has produced its first slabs and hot rolled coils using the slab caster and hot strip mill provided by Italian plantmaker Danieli at its Johannesburg Works, according to Danieli’s statement. The HRC will feed the downstream pipe mills of the US-based Barnes Group, the controlling shareholder of Scaw Metals, and other flat product consuming companies.

In January last year, Scaw Metals had chosen Danieli technology to expand its product portfolio to include flat products and to increase production capacity, making the Johannesburg Works a center for flat steel production in sub-Saharan Africa, as SteelOrbis previously reported.

The new slab caster has the capacity to annually produce 650,000 mt of prime quality slabs in various widths, while the hot strip mill will roll hot strip in various widths down to thicknesses in the range of 1.2 mm-8.0 mm. The new water treatment plant and the modern EAF also provided by Danieli will be put in operation in the coming months.
