On June 5, the Spanish Statistical Institute (INE) released the country's monthly industrial production index for April 2009. According to the report, the industrial production index adjusted for calendar effects decreased 19.7 percent in April, as compared with the same month in 2008. Meanwhile, the general industrial production index (IPI) experienced a 28.6 percent decrease in April 2009, year on year.
According to the economic destination of the goods, the production index decreases as compared with the same month of the previous year were 21.5 percent for consumer goods, 34.0 percent for capital goods, 36.2 percent for intermediate goods, and, finally, 11.2 percent for energy.
The average rate IPI decrease adjusted for calendar effects was 21.9 percent in the
interannual rate during the first four months of 2009.
The activities that experienced less significant decreases during the January-April 2009 period were manufacture of food products, with a 3.4 percent decrease, manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products down 7.3 percent and manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products down 7.3 percent.
On the other hand, the activities with the greatest decreases were manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, down 47.5 percent, and manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products which decreased 39.5 percent.
The manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, fell by 33 percent to 77.5 points, compared to April 2008, while the manufacture of basic metals decreased 41.6 percent year on year to 71.4 points.
