SSAB initiates talks on possible temporary lay-offs in Finland

Swedish specialty steel producer SSAB Europe has announced that it has initiated employer-employee negotiations regarding possible temporary lay-offs at its Finnish operations, driven by a decline in production volumes at its Nordic operations.

There is a concern about potential temporary lay-offs at the company’s Finnish arm, except at Lappohja tube mill and at the company’s subsidiaries Ruukki Construction, Tibnor, Raahen Voima and Presteel. After the negotiations, the company may decide on temporary lay-offs for a maximum of 90 days, but the number of the workers affected will be decided during the negotiations. The negotiations started on September 2 and will last for at least two weeks.

On the other hand, SSAB’s subsidiary Tibnor has also initiated separate negotiations to possibly reduce its workforce by 35 employees at most in 2019 at all Tibnor operations in Finland, excepting its Järvenpää unit. The negotiations are expected to last for at least six weeks.
