Steel Manufacturers Association applauds new chemical safety law

President Barack Obama today signed into law the bipartisan Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, legislation that will reform the nation’s 40-year-old chemical management law, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

Steel Manufacturers Association President Philip K. Bell issued a statement following President Obama’s signing of the TSCA reform legislation, nothing that the TSCA, which became law in 1976, is the only major environmental law that had not been updated since its enactment.

“The sensible measures contained in this reform will promote the safer, more effective management of chemicals,” said Bell. “Regulatory certainty will provide SMA members and other domestic manufacturers with an increased ability to operate, invest, and grow their businesses.  Additionally, the environment and public health will benefit from risk-based protections and the EPA’s increased ability to focus on highest priority chemicals.”
