Sweden’s SSAB granted environmental approval for EAF project at Luleå

Friday, 20 December 2024 14:43:56 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

Swedish specialty steel producer SSAB has announced that it has received environmental approval for its Luleå mini mill project.

Accordingly, the land and environmental court has greenlighted the project, allowing its construction to finally begin. The electric arc furnace (EAF)-based mini-mill will operate with clean electricity and use a mix of fossil-free sponge iron produced with the company’s HYBRIT technology and recycled scrap. As a result, SSAB will not only be able to produce green steel and reduce its emissions by about 2.8 million mt per year, but also to achieve higher efficiency and shorter lead times.

The Luleå mini mill with a production capacity of 2.5 million mt per year is scheduled for start-up in late 2028.
