Taiwan-based steelmaker China Steel Corporation (CSC) has announced that it has produced 150 mt of the world’s first carbon-neutral wire rod using an electric arc furnace. This is the first step taken by the company towards becoming carbon-neutral by 2050, and is also a big step for Taiwan’s steel industry in terms of decarbonization.

The first batch of carbon-neutral wire rods have been delivered to Taiwan’s Jinhe and Shengyu Steel, which will use these products to produce hexagonal screws. This step will mark the production of Taiwan’s first carbon-neutral green steel products.

As SteelOrbis reported previously, UK-based plantmaker Primetals Technologies has been selected by CSC to conduct a decarbonization study to help the latter reduce carbon emissions at its Kaohsiung plant in Taiwan by 25 percent by 2030.
