Tata Steel’s April sales up by 31 percent

Indian steel maker Tata Steel said on Thursday, May 7 that April steel sales from its Indian operations rose by 31 percent to 452,000 mt compared to year-ago period.

The company's Indian operations account for approximately a quarter of the group's total global annual capacity of 30 million mt, which includes its Anglo-Dutch unit Corus.

During the month in question, Tata Steel saw its saleable steel production surging by 30 percent to 516,000 mt from 396,000 mt, compared to the corresponding month last year.

According to the company's statement, sales of long products increased by 39 percent in April, while flat products up by 27 percent.

In addition, the steel major's crude steel output for the month in question also went up by 22 percent to 503,000 mt from 412,000 mt, while hot metal production rose by 30 percent to 579,000 mt from 445,000 mt, both compared to April, 2008.
