Mexican steelmaker Ternium Mexico has developed a dual phase steel at its Churubusco mill in Monterrey, with the goal of supplying the automotive industry, the company said Tuesday.
According to Ternium, the new steel will have the ability to make autos lighter and safer by combining two different phases or microstructures of the steel: the ferrite, which generates a very soft and ductile material; and the martensite, which is hard and allows materials to be more resistant.
“We made a very strong investment at the Churubusco hot rolling mill. We completely changed the cooling table to be able to produce high-grade grades, and it was designed specifically for dual phase steel,” said Lucia Nares, Ternium Mexico’s product engineer at the company’s Guerrero and Churubusco mills.
Ternium said the product was already approved and ready to be tested by a client, likely in the automotive sector although the company did not provide a name.
