Ternium is considering installing a second line at its Tenigal plant to supply products for the automotive market that are currently being supplied by imports, said Máximo Vedoya, President of Ternium Mexico.
He stressed that the plant in Tenigal, in Nuevo León, already operates at 84 percent of its capacity, and in July he expects the rate to rise to 100 percent-producing around 400,000 tons of galvanized sheet.
According to reports, Ternium is aiming to focus all the capacity at Tenigal on automotive steel by the first quarter of 2015.
"We are in the process of certification, and in 6 months from now will be full capacity for the automotive industry," he said.
Tenigal is a a joint venture between Ternium S.A. (51 percent) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (49 percent) for manufacture and sale of automotive hot dip galvanized and galvannealed steel sheets. Theplant started commercial production in August 2013.
