Germany’s Ministry of Economy has confirmed its support for German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp for the construction of its green steel production plant in Duisburg under its “tkH2steel project”.
The government is willing to fund the tH2steel project with a total of around €2 billion, though approval by the European Commission is awaited.
The company plans to commission a new direct reduction plant at the end of 2026. The plant will be operated with natural gas at first, and from the end of 2027 with increasing amounts of hydrogen.
“The steel industry in Germany has set out to tackle the major task of decarbonization and we as the federal government must and will support them in this. We stand by our funding commitments and, in consultation with the European Commission, we will do everything we can to make this aid possible,” Robert Habeck, the country’s economy minister, said.
