German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp AG's subsidiary ThyssenKrupp Nirosta has announced that it will invest €18 million in a new skin pass mill, a central unit of the cold rolling facility at its Dillenburg plant.

According to a company release, preparatory work has now begun and the order has been placed with German equipment manufacturer BWG Bergwerk-und Walzwerk-Maschinenbau GmbH. The new skin pass mill for the downstream treatment of cold rolled stainless steel is scheduled to start production in early 2012.

The new unit is for thicknesses from 0.20 to 3.50 millimeters, which cannot be met with the current equipment. Among other things, the investment will improve strip quality, increase productivity and allow customer requirements to be better met, ThyssenKrupp said.
