Japanese steel producer Tokyo Steel has announced that it has introduced enso®, a new green steel brand that it has developed in collaboration with UK-based steel trading company Stemcor Group.

Initially, the brand in question will include hot rolled coil and hot rolled plate, with plans to expand the portfolio to downstream products in the future. The company has produced the enso® at its electric arc furnaces using steel scrap, which have lower carbon characteristics compared to traditional methods. In order to expand the brand, Tokyo Steel also plans to produce a steel product with ultra-low carbon emissions by using 100 percent renewable energy, which is scheduled to be available in late 2024.

With the new green steel brand, Tokyo Steel will be able to contribute to the circular economy and meet the requirements within the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism of the EU. The Japanese steelmaker has been supplying HRC and HRP products to the EU market on a stable monthly basis for some time, fulfilling growing demand for low embodied carbon steel from its customers in construction, manufacturing and renewable energy generation industries.
