Turkish economy minister Nihat Zeybekci has stated that Turkey’s retaliatory measures against the Section 232 tariffs imposed by the US have come into effect as of today, June 21, according to media reports.

Accordingly, Turkey has started to impose additional customs duties on certain products including coal, paper, walnut-almond, tobacco, rice, whisky, automobiles, cosmetics, machinery and equipment and petrochemical products from the US, worth $1.8 billion with a tax burden of $266.5 billion. In this context, additional customs duties have been imposed on 22 products from the US, while the additional duty on automobiles stands at 60 percent.

“The total tariff burden today being imposed by Turkey on the US is commensurate with the additional costs Turkey faces due to the tariffs imposed on it by the US. They are proportional, measured and designed to protect Turkey’s interests, while encouraging dialogue,” Mr. Zeybekci stated.
