Turkey’s Ministry of Environment and Urbanization has announced that the environmental impact assessment (EIA) application made by Turkish steelmaker Kroman Çelik for its non-hazardous waste (slag) recycling and regular storage facility project in Kocaeli has been examined and that the environmental impact assessment process has begun.
Within the scope of the project with an investment cost of TRY 94.32 million ($3.31 million), the company will pre-process the slag generated in the iron and steel factory at the new facility it will establish with a capacity of 155 mt/h. Kroman Çelik stated that the materials recycled via the facility will be used as raw materials at the melting shop, while the non-recyclable waste will be disposed of in the regular storage facility.
Kroman Çelik’s iron and steel factory currently produces an annual 250,000 mt of slag. With the capacity increase planned to be put into operation in 2025, an annual 600,000 mt of slag will be generated.
Meanwhile, the company plans a capacity increase project for its port facilities in Kocaeli with an investment cost of TRY 350 million ($12.28 million), as SteelOrbis previously reported. Within the scope of the given project, the company will build a 255 meter-long and 32 meter-wide dock and increase its port handling capacity from 60,000 dwt to 80,000 dwt.
