According to the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (TCUD), Turkey’s steel imports declined in May on year-on-year basis, after moving on an upward trend for a long time.
In May alone, Turkey’s steel imports declined by 8.9 percent to 1.6 million mt, with a value of $1.52 billion, down 14.2 percent, both year on year.
In the January-May period of this year, Turkey's steel imports increased by 8.3 percent year on year to 7.98 million mt, though the value of these imports decreased by 10.4 percent to $4.63 billion, both compared to the same period last year.
In the first five months of this year, Turkey’s semi-finished imports fell by 3.3 percent to 2.84 million mt, with a value of $818.5 million, down by 32.2 percent, both on year-on-year basis. In the given period, Turkey’s flat steel imports continued to increase with a 14.4 percent rise year on year to 3.94 million mt, with the value of these imports falling by 17 percent to $2.0 billion, compared to the same period last year.
In the January-May period of this year, Turkey's steel export volume was equivalent to 92 percent of its steel import volume, compared to 102 percent in the same period last year.
