According to the statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), Turkey's industrial turnover index in May 2009 increased by 3.7 percent compared to the previous month, but decreased by 16 percent year on year, to 145.2 points.
Looking at the various industrial sectors in Turkey, in May this year the mining sector turnover index fell 7.7 percent year on year from 204.6 to 188.8, while the manufacturing sector index declined by 16.2 percent from 172.1 to 144.2.
According to the main industrial groupings (MIGs) classification, the highest year-on-year decrease in May was realized in energy with a drop of 40.7 percent, followed by intermediate goods with a decline of 23.8 percent.
With respect to the year-on-year changes in the industrial turnover index in May this year, the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products registered the highest decrease of 47 percent, followed by manufacture of basic metal products with a 46.8 percent drop, while manufacture of electrical machinery recorded a fall of 23.3 percent.
Turkey's industrial new orders index in May decreased by 19.4 percent year on year and increased 3.5 percent month on month.
According to the main industrial groupings classification, the highest yearly decrease in May in terms of the monthly industrial new orders index was realized in intermediate goods.
In addition, the industrial new orders index in May for the manufacture of basic metal products decreased by 45.6 percent year on year.
