Turkish steelmaker Erdemir is still interested in the acquisition of the Italian steel producer Ilva, as SteelOrbis has learned from local Italian media sources.

“It is true that Erdemir remains interested in Ilva”, Turkish economy minister Nihat Zeybekci has stated in response to journalists’ questions during a visit to Rome. Minister Zeybekci went on to say, “For the moment, technical meetings are continuing. We hope the matter proceeds in the indicated direction. It would be a great result.” Furthermore, he stated, “Erdemir is a private sector company which is able to compete on the basis on its world standards. It has known expertise in the iron and steel sector and is one of the few able to compete with China.”

In June this year, in an interview with Bloomberg HT, Ali Pandir, CEO of Erdemir Group, said that the company had examined Italian steelmaker Ilva’s plants in Italy and analyzed the company details, but that they would not be submitting a binding offer for Ilva.
