Turkish rebar exports switch focus from UAE to Egypt in Jan-May 2009

According to the data provided by the Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters' Association (IMMIB), in the January-May period of the current year Turkey's total rebar exports amounted to 4.714 million metric tons, increasing by 10.90 percent year on year. Meanwhile, the revenue generated by these exports totaled $2.123 billion, decreasing by 33.24 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the first five months of 2009, the amount of rebar exported from Turkey to the Middle East countries reached 1.807 million mt, down 39.53 percent year on year, totaling a value of $791 million, decreasing by 64.86 percent compared to the value in Jan-May 2008. In particular, rebar exports to the UAE fell by 68.38 percent year on year, from 2.206 million metric tons to 697,650 metric tons.

On the other hand, in the period in question Turkey's rebar exports to North Africa totaled 2.223 million metric tons, up 2,668 percent year on year, totaling a value of $1.008 billion, up 1,498 percent compared to value in the same period of the previous year. In particular, in the first five months of 2009 exports to Egypt increased by 9,893 percent year on year from 18,470 metric tons to 1.845 million metric tons.

In Jan-May 2009, Turkish rebar exports to Europe amounted to 205,618 metric tons, decreasing by 41.89 percent year on year, totaling a value of $97.283 million, down 62.09 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the period in question rebar exports to the Americas totaled 117,917 metric tons, down 33.98 percent year on year, totaling a value of $60.864 million, decreasing by 54.62 percent compared to the first five months of 2008.

In Jan-May 2009, Turkish rebar exports to the CIS amounted to 26,069 metric tons, decreasing by 47.14 percent year on year, totaling a value of $14.500 million, down 63.10 percent compared to the value in the same period of the previous year.
