The World Economic Forum (WEF) has recognized the decarbonization efforts of Emirates Steel Arkan (ESA), the UAE’s largest steel manufacturer and market leader, in its latest article.
Accordingly, the WEF has included ESA among the top five global steelmakers pioneering decarbonization in steel production including Brazilian integrated long steel producer Aço Verde do Brasil, fellow Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau, Spanish green steel producer Hydnum Steel and Australia-based Green Steel of Western Australia (GSWA).
In 2016, ESA had joined forces with UAE-based carbon capture company Al Reyadah and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to capture carbon from its direct reduced iron (DRI) plant. Also, in 2023, the company had announced its collaboration with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) to develop the MENA region’s first green hydrogen project, as SteelOrbis reported previously.
Having green steel products with low carbon intensity in its portfolio, the Emirati steelmaker continues to invest in decarbonization technologies, such as a pilot electrical process gas heater at its DRI plant No. 1.
