Speaking at the conference titled “EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and Green Transformation in the Turkish Steel Industry” held by Turkish Steel Exporters’ Association (ÇİB) in Istanbul on December 10, Uğur Dalbeler, vice president of the ÇİB, stated that “green transition” has been the most important agenda of the global steel industry for the last five years.
Pointing out that Turkey is one of the countries producing the cleanest steel in the global steel industry, as scrap-based production in the country corresponds to 75 percent of the total production, Mr. Dalbeler said, “We are at one quarter of the world average in terms of emissions. In that sense, we can say that we are as green as we can be.” Stating that the global steel trade volume is approximately 400 million mt, and that the cleanest and most advantageous one in this trade is the Turkish steel industry, Mr. Dalbeler said that if the Turkish steel industry might build on this opportunity, however it must be managed at minimum cost.
Noting that the Turkish steel industry is in a good situation in terms of Scope 1 (production-related) and 2 emissions (energy-related), but is disadvantaged in terms of Scope 3 (logistics-related) emissions, Mr. Dalbeler stated that Turkish companies’ awareness should be raised in order to reduce the emissions caused by logistics.
