UK-based workers’ union Unite has announced that it has welcomed Tata Steel management’s being open to dialogue and that it has suspended its plans to go on a strike against the company’s operations in the country on July 8.

Accordingly, India-based Tata Steel, the holding company of Tata Steel UK, is now ready to begin negotiations not only on layoffs but also on future investments for its operations at its Port Talbot and Llanwern plants in South Wales.

About 1,500 steelworkers based at the abovementioned plants were getting ready to begin an “all-out indefinite strike action” from July 8 against the company’s plans to close the two blast furnaces and cut up to 2,800 jobs, as SteelOrbis reported previously. In return, Tata Steel UK was considering the early shutdown of its operations due to safety and operational concerns amid the strike threat.
