Dneprovsky Iron and Steel Works (DMKD), a subsidiary of Ukrainian steelmaker Industrial Union of Donbass, announced that it has increased the capacity of its continuous slab caster No. 1 by about 33 percent after recent modernization work.

Currently, the continuous slab caster No. 1 is able to perform 20 meltings a day for serial casting, while its designed capacity was 15 meltings.

The increase of the slab caster's capacity will allow DMKD to decrease consumption of raw materials during the production process, and thus raise the competitiveness of its products.

DMKD's continuous slab caster No. 1 was commissioned in September 2008, with a designed capacity of 1.7 million mt per year.

DMKD is the sixth-largest steelmaker in Ukraine, accounting for 9.1 percent of the country's steel production.
