The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first four months of 2009.
Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel products output by 52.9 percent and its pipe production by 76.3 percent year on year, to 864,000 mt and 9,400 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 49 percent, its pig iron output by 44.6 percent and its agglomerate production by 47.9 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.213 million, 1.033 million and 2.366 million.
During the first four months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 44.2 percent to 1.159 million mt, its pig iron production by 41.8 percent to 992,000 mt and its finished steel production by 41.1 percent to 1.104 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production saw a slight decrease of 1.8 percent to 641,000 mt, while its metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 26.5 percent to 602,000 mt year on year.
In January-April 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 1.392 million mt of finished steel - down 40.4 percent, 1.469 million mt of crude steel - down 43.8 percent, 1.314 million mt of pig iron - down 43.7 percent, and 2.421 million mt of agglomerate - down 36.8 percent, all compared to the first four months of 2008.
During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 25 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 26 percent, its finished steel production by 24.4 percent, and its agglomerate production by 15 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.09 million, 1.206 million, 1.136 million and 1.414 million.
During the first four months of 2009, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 27.2 percent to 707,000 mt, its crude steel production by 21 percent to 816,000 mt, its finished steel output by 24.8 percent to 763,000 mt, and its agglomerate production by 12.5 percent to 702,000 mt, all compared with the same period last year.
