US mill shipments up 5.7 percent in August

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Thursday that for the month of August 2009, US steel mills shipped 5,570,000 net tons, a 5.7 percent increase from the 5,271,000 nt shipped in the previous month, July 2009, and a 37.1 percent decrease from the 8,860,000 nt shipped in August 2008.

A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes: hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip, up 2.8 percent; hot rolled sheet, up 6.8 percent; and cold rolled sheet, up 9.9 percent.

AISI's member companies represent approximately 75 percent of both US and North American steel capacity.
