According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, in the week ending April 2, 2016, US domestic raw steel production was 1,650,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 70.6 percent. Production was 1,615,000 net tons in the week ending April 2, 2015 while the capability utilization then was 68.3 percent. The current week production represents a 2.2 percent increase from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending April 2, 2016 is down 1.5 percent from the previous week ending March 26, 2016 when production was 1,675,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 71.6 percent.
Adjusted year-to-date production through April 2, 2016 was 23,180,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 70.3 percent. That is down 3.0 percent from the 23,895,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 71.6 percent.
