According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, in the week ending May 7, 2016, US domestic raw steel production was 1,748,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 74.7 percent. Production was 1,704,000 net tons in the week ending May 7, 2015 while the capability utilization then was 72.1 percent. The current week production represents a 2.6 percent increase from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending May 7, 2016 is up 2.2 percent from the previous week ending April 30, 2016 when production was 1,711,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 73.2 percent.
Adjusted year-to-date production through May 7, 2016 was 31,757,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 71.5 percent. That is down 1.4 percent from the 32,196,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 71.6 percent.
