US specialty steel imports surge according to SSINA data

The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) released statistical data on imports, US consumption and import penetration for year-to-date (YTD) June 2011 Thursday.

The data represents US consumption, imports, and import penetration for June 2011 compared to the same 2010 six month period.

  • Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in YTD June 2011 were 210,847 tons, a 20.7 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; U.S. consumption was 836,401 tons, a 32.5 percent increase; six month import penetration was 25.2 percent, a 2.5 percent decrease from 2010.
  • Stainless steel plate: Imports in YTD June 2011 were 82,958 tons, a 136 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption was 175,428 tons, a 53.9 percent increase; six month import penetration was 47.3 percent, a 16.5 percent increase from 2010.
  • Stainless steel bar: Imports in YTD June 2011 were 73,149 tons, a 49.3 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption was 137,268 tons, a 34.6 percent increase; six month import penetration was 53.3 percent, a 5.2 percent increase from 2010.
  • Stainless steel rod: Imports in YTD June 2011 were 15,509 tons, a 32.8 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption was 41,613 tons, a 36.5 percent increase; six month import penetration was 37.3 percent, a 1 percent decrease from 2010.
  • Stainless steel wire: Imports in YTD June 2011 were 23,806 tons, a 11.9 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption was 28,496 tons, a 1.5 percent increase; six month import penetration was 83.5 percent, a 7.7 percent increase from 2010.

Total stainless steel imports (comprising the foregoing product lines) in YTD June 2011 were 406,269 tons, a 39.2 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption was 1,219,207 tons, a 34.6 percent increase; six month import penetration was 33.3 percent, a 1.1 percent increase from 2010.

  • Alloy tool steel: Imports in YTD June 2011 were 53,055 tons, a 52.4 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
  • Electrical steel: Imports in YTD June 2011 were 55,031 tons, a 21.7 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption was 86,932 tons, a 17 percent decrease from YTD June 2010; six month import penetration was 63.3 percent, a 20.1 percent increase from 2010.

Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD June 2011 were 514,354 tons, a 38.3 percent increase compared to YTD June 2010; US consumption was 1,335,577 tons, a 29.4 percent increase; six month import penetration was 38.5 percent, a 2.5 percent increase from 2010.
