US steel exports rise slightly in May

According to US export data, monthly steel exports in May increased 1.1 percent from April to total 728,891 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 7.7 percent decline. Exports to Mexico decreased 0.2 percent from the preceding month to 276,309 mt, and decreased 2.9 percent from May 2015. Exports to Canada increased by 0.9 percent month-on-month to 375,936 mt, which is up 1.4 percent from a year earlier.

Other major destinations for US steel exports in May include: India, at 8,212 mt; Italy, at 7,326 mt; Brazil, at 6,282 mt; China, at 5,145 mt; and Germany, at 4,741 mt.

Major products exported in May include HDG, at 106,472 mt; cut-length plates, at 98,872 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 52,810 mt; heavy structural shapes, at 46,576 mt; and cold rolled sheets, at 45,602 mt.
