US steel mill shipments up 3.8 percent in May

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that for the month of May 2016, US steel mills shipped 7,661,979 net tons, a 3.8 percent increase from the 7,379,330 net tons shipped in the previous month, April 2016, and a 6.8 percent increase from the 7,175,211 net tons shipped in May 2015. Shipments year-to-date in 2016 are 36,509,450 net tons, a 0.8 percent increase vs. 2015 shipments of 36,222,206 net tons for five months.

A comparison of May shipments to the previous month of April shows the following changes: hot rolled sheets, up 3 percent; hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip, up 2 percent; and cold rolled sheets, no change.
