US trade deficit narrows to $39.5 billion in July

The US Census Bureau and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, through the Department of Commerce, announced today that the goods and services deficit was $39.5 billion in July, down $5.2 billion from $44.7 billion in June, revised.
 
July exports were $186.3 billion, $3.4 billion more than June exports. July imports were $225.8 billion, $1.8 billion less than June imports.
 
The July decrease in the goods and services deficit reflected a decrease in the goods deficit of $5.3 billion to $60.3 billion and a decrease in the services surplus of $0.1 billion to $20.9 billion.
 
Year-to-date, the goods and services deficit decreased $0.5 billion, or 0.2 percent, from the same period in 2015. Exports decreased $63.7 billion or 4.8 percent. Imports decreased $64.2 billion or 4.0 percent.
 
The average goods and services deficit increased $0.3 billion to $42.0 billion for the three months ending in July. Year-over-year, the average goods and services deficit increased $1.0 billion from the three months ending in July 2015.
