Usiminas buys slab from Vale’s CSP

Friday, 30 September 2016 23:07:33 (GMT+3)   |   Sao Paulo

Brazilian flats producer Usiminas told SteelOrbis on Friday it acquired slab supplies from Vale’s co-owned steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica do Pecem (CSP) to supply operations at its Cubatao mill, located in the city of same name in the state of Sao Paulo.

Usiminas didn’t provide details on the quantity of slab it bought from CSP, but said the purchases “are part of a supplier development plan for Cubatao and is in line with the mill’s revitalization plan.”

Usiminas added such a plan aims to “consolidate a business model for the mill, making it sustainable through the rolling of slabs.”

Usiminas is out of the slab market following the shutdown of crude steel output at its Cubatao mill. Earlier this year, Usiminas bought 130,000 mt of slabs from ThyssenKrupp’s Companhia Siderurgica do Atlantico (CSA) to supply its Cubatao mill, following “quality tests” in December last year, when it bought 6,000 mt of slab from the same supplier.
