Apparent wire rod consumption in Mexico decreased 6.6 percent, year-over-year, in April to 212,000 metric tons (mt), the second consecutive annual decrease, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
In the last 12 months, to April, wire rod consumption in Mexico decreased seven times, with increases in August, September and November of last year (17.9, 17.8 and 8.6 percent), in January and February (6.5 and 8.0 percent) of this year.
Regarding wire rod production, it remained on a negative trend for the fifth consecutive month. In April it decreased 8.8 percent, year-over-year, to 197,000 mt.
In the last 12 months, production decreased 10 times and only in September and November of last year it registered marginal annual increases of 3.5 and 2.2 percent, respectively.
According to Canacero data, wire rod is not among the top 10 steel products in international trade.
In the first four months, wire rod consumption decreased 0.6 percent to 863,000 mt. Production decreased 7.5 percent to 798,000 mt.
The main producers in Mexico are DeAcero, Ternium, ArcelorMittal, Tyasa, Grupo Acerero and Simec.
