Peru’s only iron ore producer Shougang Hierro Peru said this week its workers started a strike on Monday, which is expected to last for an “indefinite” amount of time.
Earlier in September, the company’s affiliated union said the workers should go on strike as of September 12 if there was no agreement over the workers’ wages.
As previously anticipated by the union, the workers then initiated the strike, as there was no agreement between the two parties.
Employees reportedly want better wages and other labor benefits. Shougang said it couldn’t estimate the impacts of the strike on its business, since it was expecting employees to go to work in the next few days.
Some 953 workers at Shougang are expected to join the strike.
