The Ukrainian steel producer Zaporizhstal has placed an order with Austrian plantmaker Siemens-VAI for the delivery of equipment for the construction of its new converter workshop.

The scope of the agreement includes the supply of two pig iron sulfur removing machines, two oxygen converters with annual production capacity of 250,000 metric tons each with combined refining, two two-strand ladle furnaces, a vacuum ladle and two two-strand continuous casters for thick slabs.

The beginning of production operations using the new converter workshop will allow Zaporizhstal to expand its product range, to improve product surface quality and steel technical qualifications. In addition, the construction of the new converter at Zaporizhstal will enable the mill to reduce the use of natural gas and other raw materials and to increase its steel production capacity.

The new converter workshop is expected to come into operation in 2012.
