The Texas company McDermott, a global provider of solutions for the energy industry, began construction of a 4,600 metric ton oil platform in the port city of Altamira, in the Gulf of Mexico. The investment is $50 million, the Tamaulipas government reported in a statement.

McDermott's project, the government said, is the construction of an offshore production platform called “Manatee” for the British multinational Shell at the request of the government of Trinidad and Tobago. The estimated weight is 4,600 metric tons and will be built over a period of two years.

According to specialists, steel plates and steel pipes are one of the main inputs for the construction of marine platforms.

The project, the government said, will generate 900 direct jobs, plus indirect jobs in the input supply process.
