Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that Spanish steel producer ArcelorMittal Asturias, subsidiary of global steel giant ArcelorMittal, has started production at its slab caster No. 1 in Avilés plant revamped by SMS.

Within the context of the revamp project, the two-strand bow-type slab caster No. 1 was completely rebuilt as a vertical bending caster in order to improve the quality of the produced slabs. The revamped caster produces slabs with a thickness of 235 mm and widths between 800 mm and 1,600 mm.

The integrated Avilés steel plant of ArcelorMittal Asturias produces high-quality steel grades for the automotive industry as well as for tinplate and heavy plate production.
