ArcelorMittal Spain, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal, has published its sustainability report for 2023. ArcelorMittal invested €152 million in its plants in Spain last year, compared to €96 million in 2022 and €127 million in 2021. With this decision, the company remains firmly committed to increasing the competitiveness of its facilities and processes.
Looking at the investment specifically, more than €43 million were invested in research and development work in the country, while €13.7 million were allocated for the environment and biodiversity, an amount with which the company has been able to implement up to 13 projects to improve energy efficiency and decarbonization. The company has also allocated €15.7 million for investments in sustainability.
According to the report, the company’s share in Spain scrap consumption in 2023 was 23 percent, amounting to 2.1 million mt. This quantity has allowed ArcelorMittal Spain to prevent emissions of 2.8 million mt of carbon. The company’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions have been reduced by 10 percent in 2023 to 7.1 million mt of carbon, while it has also cut its energy consumption by 10 percent compared to 2022.
Meanwhile, ArcelorMittal produced 4.5 million mt of steel in Spain, compared to 4.8 million mt in 2022 and 6.1 million mt in 2021.
