Global steel producer ArcelorMittal has announced that it will invest over €100 million for the reconstruction of two 45-oven batteries at ArcelorMittal Asturias’ coke plant in Gijón. The reconstruction work will start in mid-2016 and the coke oven batteries are expected to reach full capacity in 2019.

The project also includes a series of additional investments to be carried out in other facilities, to adapt their processes following the restart of the batteries, which are expected to produce the first batch of coke in the first half of 2018. According to ArcelorMittal, once operational, the Gijón coke oven batteries will be able to meet the coke requirements of the blast furnaces at the site.

José Manuel Arias, Asturias Cluster CEO, highlighted the importance of this investment: “The investment approved will ensure coke production in ArcelorMittal Asturias for the next 40 years, and will contribute to securing the future of the steel industry in our region”.
