The steel giant ArcelorMittal plans in 2011 to invest more than $500 million in the upgrading and development of its Kazakhstan-based steelmaking subsidiary ArcelorMittal Temirtau, as part of the program to increase the subsidiary's production capacities to six million mt of steel per year by 2015.
Accordingly, among the priority projects to be implemented at ArcelorMittal Temirtau in 2011 are: the construction of its new 1.2 million mt capacity continuous square billet caster for its long steel producing facility, the reconstruction of its blast furnace No. 2, the overhaul of its blast furnace No. 3, the installation of a new air separation unit in its basic oxygen furnace (BOF) shop, and the construction of a new gas cleaning system in its converter shop.
In addition to large investment projects, in 2011 ArcelorMittal Temirtau plans also to implement a large number of low-cost projects, directed towards improving production technology and environmental protection, as well as focusing on modernization of outdated equipment.
In 2011, ArcelorMittal Temirtau plans to increase its crude steel output by 20 percent to four million mt, while its output of finished steel products is expected to rise by 15 percent to 3.5 million mt, both compared to 2010.
