Canada’s carbon emissions reduction plan might be insufficient to achieve targets

Jerry V. DeMarco, Canada’s Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, has stated at a press conference that the Canadian government’s plan to reduce emissions is not sufficient to meet the country’s emissions reduction targets. Canada aims to reduce carbon emissions by 40-45 percent by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.

Saying that the plan is better than the previous plans, DeMarco noted that it is still lacking in some aspects and will only reduce current levels by about one-quarter by 2030. Stating that the key policies have been delayed, he said that Canada remains several million mt short of its goal.

He added that, on the positive site, measures in the plan such as carbon pricing and regulations have the potential for deep emissions reductions if they are stringent enough and applied widely.
