In May this year, coal exports from Australian ports Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT), Abbot Point and Gladstone located in the state of Queensland went up by 8.5 percent month on month and decreased 4.4 percent year on year to 17.05 million mt, according to data released by North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation and Gladstone Ports Corporation.
In particular, coal exports from the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) in the given month totaled 4.97 million mt, up 0.6 percent year on year. Meanwhile, in May the shipments from Hay Point decreased by 28.5 percent year on year to 3.40 million mt, while shipments from Abbot Point amounted to 2.79 million mt, down 12.2 percent year on year. In addition, exports of coal from Gladstone Port rose by 18.6 percent compared to the same month of 2023 to 5.89 million mt in May.
In May, supplies to Japan accounted for 27.9 percent of the total exports, while India, South Korea and China accounted for 18.2 percent, 17.4 percent and 16.8 percent, respectively.
In the meantime, total coal shipments from the ports in question in the January-May period of the current year amounted to 80.53 million mt, SteelOrbis has learned.
