Danieli to supply engineering for SSAB’s Luleå mini-mill project

Italian plantmaker Danieli has announced that it has signed an agreement with Swedish specialty steel producer SSAB regarding the engineering phase of the latter’s Luleå mini-mill project in Sweden. Use of Danieli’s QSP-DUE technology in the mini-mill will allow SSAB to expand its product portfolio.

Under the agreement, the mini-mill will consist of two electric arc furnaces, a caster and a strip mill. The new Luleå mill will have an annual capacity of 2.5 million mt and is scheduled to start production at the end of 2028, as SteelOrbis previously reported. Environmental permits for the mill are expected at the end of 2024. When the mill is completed, SSAB will decommission its existing blast furnace-based production system in Luleå, resulting in a seven percent reduction in carbon emissions.
