According to first estimates released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, in May this year the seasonally-adjusted production of the construction sector in the European Union member states (EU-27) decreased by 1.0 percent compared to April and fell by 2.5 percent compared to the same month of 2023. In April, production in the construction sector had remained stable month on month.
In the euro area, the seasonally-adjusted production of the construction sector in May went down by 0.9 percent month on month and by 2.4 percent year on year. In April, production had increased by 0.4 percent month on month.
Building construction in the EU-27 in May moved down by 0.9 percent month on month and decreased by 4.8 percent year on year, while civil engineering output in the region went down 1.5 percent month on month and decreased by 0.8 percent year on year. In the euro area, building construction was down 1.0 percent compared to the previous month and decreased by 4.8 percent year on year, while civil engineering output in the region fell by 0.6 percent month on month and by 0.4 percent year on year.
As compared to April, construction output in May increased by 1.9 percent in Finland, by 1.1 percent in Bulgaria, and by 0.3 percent in Slovakia and Spain, while it decreased by 5.1 percent in Czechia, by 4.1 percent in Romania and by 3.8 percent in Hungary.
As compared to May 2023, construction output in May this year increased by 7.3 percent in Hungary, by 4.4 percent in Bulgaria and by 1.1 percent in Denmark, while it decreased by 7.5 percent in Sweden, by 7.4 percent in Slovenia and by 7.0 percent in Germany.
